INTERNATIONAL CONFEDERATION OF MIDWIVES (ICM) AWARD

AMDD established this award in 2002 in collaboration with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to recognize and honor exceptional efforts made to improve women's access to high-quality emergency obstetric care (EmOC). AMDD & ICM will bestow awards every year to midwives who have acted as change agents in their country for the reduction of maternal and neonatal death and disability.

The 2003 awards will be presented at the ICM Americas Regional Conference for Midwives to held in Trinidad and Tobago, April 23-24, 2004.

Dr. Barbara Kwast, AMDD Senior Advisor, presented the 2002 awards at the 26th Triennial Congress for Midwives held in April, 2002 in Vienna, Austria.

2002 Recipients

  • Martha Bokosi - Malawi

    Martha Bokosi has been the Programme Manager of the Southern Region Safe Motherhood Programme since 1998. She has twenty years of midwifery experience, and has demonstrated an exceptional ability in helping childbearing families understand pregnancy danger signs, and has created an enabling environment for skilled attendance at birth and life saving skills among midwives.

  • Venus Mark - Trinidad and Tobago

    Venus Mark is a founding member of the Trinidad and Tobago midwifery association and has demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial skills in order to position midwives as leaders in their communities.

  • Phan Thi Hanh - Vietnam

    Phan Thi Hanh is the founder of the Vietnamese Association of Midwives and has worked to develop the Association as a movement for change with a strong commitment to the Safe Motherhood Initiative.
